I have had such a busy week so far and it's only Tuesday!! Sheesh!
I am so happy because the humidity has FINALLY calmed down a bit. Today was absolutely gorgeous out. Puppy and I could actually go for a nice walk in the sunshine without him panting like crazy for water. BF and I have been keeping him indoors and walking him in the evening because it's been insanely humid and hot out.
So.. I have been thinking long and hard about my hair. I absolutely LOVE being blonde, but I am soooooo hating the brassiness that comes along with it. I just got my hair done not too long ago... trust me.. I LOVE LOVE LOVE it, but I hate that I go through so much blue shampoo just to keep the brassiness down. Not to mention, the blue shampoo that actually works on me... dries my hair out like no tomorrow!!! I have to limit how much I use because it's really drying. I am really trying to just use my sulphate-free shampoos, but then my blonde goes brassy again...sucks!
Naturally, I would say that I'm a dark blonde, light brown. I don't think I would say I'm any darker than that. I have been putting darker lowlights through my hair lately to break up the blonde. I have been getting them blended throughout my hair which I am really really loving galore. I have to admit, that I am really liking the darker pieces. I am almost thinking about taking a little leap and going a bit darker, or maybe a lot darker. I'm not sure, what do you all think?
BF likes me blonde, but I'm not just going to stay that way because he likes it. He will have to love me no matter what....LOL
Here are some hair colors and looks that I really like. Do you think any of these would suit me? Right now, I'm pretty white-ish blonde with lowlights throughout.
Carmen Electra (1st pic) and Lauren Conrade (2nd pic), are sporting the more Ombre look. It's still pretty blonde, but just at the ends. I love this look, but that would mean that keeping it really blonde on my ends would maybe be too damaging?
I love Alessandra Ambrosio's hair. I have always wanted to do my hair like hers, in terms of color. I love how it's dark, but there are still skinny blonde pieces blended throughout her hair so it looks more natural. I'm really leaning towards this color, but it will be a lot darker than I'm used to.
I really like Ashley Simpson's hair here. It would look super awesome with a tan. I really like the color, but do you think it would fade too reddish-y?
I like Ashley Tisdale's look here, maybe with less highlights, but it's super cute.
Again, this is more of an Ombre look, probably like the 1st pic, since it's Carmen Electra, but I feel like the darker color is more ash-y, which I love.
Again, this is more of a darker blonde color. I really love the highlights and lowlights blended together so naturally.
Now.. my hair isn't this dark naturally but I really love the richness of this color. I don't really love reddish colors on me, although they look amazing on lots of people. If I'm going to go dark, then I want it to be "rich" in color. What do you all think? Would this totally wash me out?
Or... do you think I should stay light blonde?
You all NEED to give me your imput. Again, I really love colors on the more ash-y side. I am worried that going dark is totally going to fade like crazy after like the 1st wash, but in doing that, I would have to have my hair appointments pretty close together so Cayla could keep depositing the dark color, until it actually stays.
I have been blonde for so long that I just feel like tweeking it and making a change for a little would be good for the health of my hair. I am worried that going darker would wash out my face and make me look sickly, but who knows... air brushing, bronzer and self tanner are my friends these days, so maybe that would help?
Comment below and give me some feedback if any of these pics would work. If you have any pics that you think would look nice, send them my way!!
Love,
Mel

I think your hair is beautiful, but I TOTALLY know where you are coming from. For years my hair was platinum blonde and it was damaging and I couldn't grow it super long. So I went back to my natural color (dark brown) and now I can't say I would ever go back to blonde. My hair has now been able to grow past my boobs and it's healthy. I know one of the (funny) reasons I decided to go back to brunette was because I was watching the Real Housewives of OC and all of the older women's blonde hair looks like HAY from dying it for so many years and it makes them all look so much OLDER than they are. But anyway, I think you'd look great no matter what. xo
aww thanks :) OMG, I totally thought I was the only one who thought their hair looks like hay...lol.. I soooo do not want to look like that. Actually I was pretty blonde a couple of years ago and my hair totally STOPPED growing and broke off :( It was awful. I vowed to keep my hair healthier. It's finally at a "good stage" but I need to give it a break. I can't stand this brassiness any longer. It drives me crazy. I think your hair looks gorgeous in the pic you have!!! Hopefully dark suits me, otherwise I will have to slowly go back to blonde in a very minimal damaging way :) xoxo
I used to have blonde hair but the last couple years I let it go back to my natural color which is light brown. It is so much healthier now. I think Alessandra's color would look good on you.
do you miss the blonde? Ya.. I LOVE Alessandra's hair. I was swaying towards her color but wasn't sure if that was too dark to start?
I completely understand!! I went through the same thing. I used to be platinum blond too! I have been blond since I was younger and started adding high lights in high school because my hair was getting darker at the roots. Over the past year I started putting low lights in because my hair was turning into a brassy color. I contemplated going dark but my hair stylist told me that we should ease into it with low lights. My hair is a lot shinier with low lights in and is finally turning darker the color that I am aiming for. I do however, put a tiny bit of high lights in too. You can see frizz easier on blonds which sucks because I love being blond!
Do you have blue eyes? I think you would look beautiful with dark blonde lowlights similar to Lauren Conrad! Or even light brown with baby blonde & light blonde highlights like Jennifer Aniston - that would look gorgeous too! Change is always good (and fun!) I say go for it :) <3
i would go a little darker each time you get it done to gradually go into it. I also love Alessandra's hair and that's kind of what I base my color on and it's significantly darker than what you have now so I would go about it in a more gradual way so it's not so shocking (i remember when I was blonde i went to almost black hair and it was traumatizing!)
good luck :)
Anna - Yes! I have blue eyes and I am totally excited to try something different!!
Veronika - I am definitely going to slowly go darker. I will see what my colorist says in terms of gradually getting to Alessandra's hair (love her too) and hopefully it won't be too scary. Plus, if I really love a certain shade along the way... bonus!!!
Thanks girls!!!
Oooo, you've been talking about taking the leap for a while now and I'd say just go for it girl!! It's just hair. I know us girls love our hair, but if you don't fall head-over-heels for it, then there are always ways to fix it. I think starting cautiously with the Carmen and graduating to the Alessandra is the best move to avoid the shock factor and allow yourself to get used to the colour. Also, if you hate how you look with the Carmen, it will be less of a bumpy road back to the Julianne:) I think you will look just gorgeous in any colour, so go for it! P.S. I just went dark blonde and I'm loving it.
I go back and forth between dark brown and blonde. I hate the brassiness and popcorn butter yellow color my hair gets, but I LOVE being blonde.
I went slowly darker with blonde highlights and liked that look too. I'll probably go back to it someday, but for now, highlights are my thing. Just try it. Nothing is permanent!
I was light blonde FOREVER (10 years!). Then I decided to go darker. It took a really long time to figure out what darker color looked good on me. Right now mine is more caramel colored with partial highlights in the front. It really has done wonders for my hair. I can go 6 months between appointments. My husband also likes me light blonde, but like you said, I'm not doing it just because he likes it!
Hi Melanie,
I say go for it!...but gradually as you have said.
Question for you....what blue shampoo have you been using? I can't seem to find one that I like that works the way I want it to.
Thanks!
Cynthia
I agree with you girls.. starting one step at a time, then if it's too much, head back to the blonde world..lol
Cynthia - I use L'Oreal Silver Shampoo. It's from the Professional line (salon L'Oreal, not drug stor). It's crazy dark blue and works amazing!!! You leave it on your hair for about 5 min, then rinse. If you are really brassy, use it a few times in a row. If you leave it on too long, your hair will have a purple tint, so just leave it for about 5 min and you should be good. However, it dries your hair out, so treat yourself to a moisturizing deep conditioner for the days you use the blue shampoo.
I have to say I would go darker. It would be a nice change and much healthier for your hair. I think your current color looks great, but I have a friend who is naturally a really light blonde with blue eyes and has been coloring her hair dark for the past few years. She looks SO much better as a brunette its crazy! Good luck making your decision, whatever you pick will look great : )
thank you! I LOVE being blonde, but sometimes the upkeep is a little too much, especially for the health of my hair. I don't know how dark I want to go, but enough that I can go in between color appointments less often :)
I too was a former bleach blonde girl and it totally wrecked my hair. For the past 6-7 years I have gone darker with a mix of lowlights and darker blonde tones. Now as I am nearing 30 this fall (eeep!) I want to try something even more daring and I love the pic of the girl with the "rich" brunette hair(it almost looks like there is a slight auburn hint to it). Seriously consider a mix of more lowlights and darker highlights, your hair will thank you. My hair has been so much healthier and shinier. Definitely do any color change gradually, it's alot less scary! Love your blog xoxo
Thanks Colleen! I will start this process gradually. I already have some lowlights and have noticed my hair acting better and a lot less frizzy. I like more of an ashy dark than golden/red.. hopefully throughout this process I can find a color that suits me. I'm excited to show you some pics after my next color appointment in August!! xo
It's such a weird and funny feeling when you go dark after years of blonde.. Looking into the mirror and seeing someone different, it's scary at first and then you get used to that person in the mirror and once you get used to it it's kinda like discovering yourself again. Corny I know but when you switch you can switch more then just hair. Your complexion changes so you can mix make up colours. I love how I discovered purple looked so good on me dark. It's things like that, that make the switch to the dark side so worth it.
anyways I was blonde forever. Just like yours, i went to the last colour and it lasted for about a week and then it turned to Ashley Simpsons colour. Like a mousey colour. The blonde really came threw. I waited with that colour for 4 months. I was surpised with how well my roots blended out nicely. I was determined to have as natural look as possible so try to grow it out as long as you can take. It was a rough last two months lol. Then I went a blonder for the summer. as sun kissed as possible. I gave my hairstylest this pic and I have that. I just love it cause in the winter I can go dark but not have to deal with the crazy process. You seen my hair at the gym its close to this i think. Either way whatever you do I can't wait to see it!!!!!

To your brassiness comment. I actually was jsut in Beauty Brand for their annuel $11.98 liter sale (AWESOME - you must go stock up if you have one nearby). I, like you have the same natural darker blonde hair color and go bright blonde in the Summer. I asked the women there what I should do to tone down on teh brassiness situation. They suggested to use the purple shampoo only a 2-3 times a week, and use the red Redkin shampoo/conditioner to even it out and save my color. I'm going to give it a shot and thought I'd share.
But if I were to pick from the colors above, I'd say Ashley Tisdale or Alessandra Ambrosio's hair looks amazing! I attempted to go dark like Ashley Simpson's last year from my bright blonde, and thought I'd ease into it, turned to a grey ugly color within two weeks. ICK. Next time I'm going VERY dark right away if I go dark to avoid the grey!
A Candid Life
Hi! I wanted to help you out, as a hairdresser. Going blonde, isn't as bad as they're saying. Your hair is made of keritinized protein, the same material that makes a rhino horns, tough stuff. You grow 1/4 - 1/2 in. of new hair per month. (around 6 inches a year, but everyone is different.) Over a few years you have entitely new hair.
The damage comes from multiple factors.
1: heat syling
2: sun exposure
3: drying shampoo
4: chlorine in pools
5: wind, rough brushing, rough towling
Try washing less often, and possibly skipping shampoo althogether. (look up conditioner washing)
then you can style less often too, which saves your hair
There isn't a product to restore hair. You can only protect it!
Ladies, maybe you can help me! I find that hairdressers just don't tell me anything and I am feeling desperate and confused! I was blonde, then went dark brown, and now am trying to go blonde again. I have been through the horrific ginger stages and am now blonde again, but it goes brassy so quickly something which I did not have to deal with before. And it is SO dry! So I want to go to my more natural darker blonde but still have some blonde highlights just like the pics Mel put up. How do I go about doing this? obviously I will get a hairdresser to do it but I need to know what my options are. Do I just start with lowlights or do I get an all over colour that is dark blonde and then highlight? I am so desperate, I hate my hair now. Please, any suggestions will help. Monique xx
I like Alessandra Ambrosio's hair & Ashley Simpsons colors depends if u want more depth or not. although this is an old post.. who knows what you've done by now?.. In my opinion being naturally blonde(from childhood platinum to adult med/dark blonde) my eyebrows are still soooo light, and I personally find it fake looking for gals(and guys)who dive into the whites' when their brows overwhelm with darkness. example, I thought Hilary Duff looked soo much more natural when she went from boring blonde to a darker blonde richer color (even though here brows were not dark but the new hue made he skin tone glow more)everyone can go blonde... but not platinum. It'd be great to see Christina Aguilera go for a Alessandra Ambrosio hair. Her skin-tone does not go with white (the housewives hair)
